When and where is the Iowa African Film Festival?

The inaugural festival runs August 6–8, 2026 in Des Moines, Iowa. The venue will be announced soon.

How much are tickets?

Passes range from $25 to $100: Three-Film Pass ($25), Day Pass ($50), Two-Day Package ($75), and Full Festival Pass ($100, including welcome presentations and special Features screenings). Get passes on the Tickets page.

What's included in the festival?

Three days of finalist screenings, workshops, open panels, filmmaker conversations, the African Cultural Festival, and an Awards Ceremony — with 15 finalists in each competing category, from 54+ countries.

What does “15 finalists per category” mean?

A programming committee selects 15 finalists in each competing category (narrative, documentary, short, diaspora). The Iowa Spotlight is a smaller curated local selection, and the Student & Youth strand screens as a non-competitive showcase.

How can I submit my film?

African and diaspora filmmakers worldwide submit via FilmFreeway. See the Submit a Film page for categories, eligibility, and deadlines.

Can I get a refund or transfer my pass?

If your plans change, email us before the festival and we'll do our best to help with a transfer or refund where possible. Contact details are on the Contact page.

Is the festival accessible?

Yes — accessibility is a priority. Venue access details will be published with the confirmed venue; see the Accessibility page or email us with specific needs and we'll plan ahead with you.

Are the screenings family-friendly?

Programming spans a range of themes and ratings. Individual films will carry guidance in the published programme so you can choose what's right for you and younger viewers.

Can I volunteer?

Absolutely — the festival runs on volunteers. Sign up on the Volunteer page and tell us how you'd like to help across August 6–8.
